Butte, Montana -- an old Montana mining town with a rich history and home of The Copper Kings. From Wikipedia: Butte began as a mining town in the late 19th century. At first only gold and silver were mined in the area, but the advent of electricity caused a soaring demand for copper, which was abundant in the area. The small town soon became one of the most prosperous cities in the country, especially during World War I, and was often called "the Richest Hill on Earth". In the early 20th century the population was a booming 85,000. Today it is about 35,000. I didn't get a chance to take this walking tour, but I have a feeling it would be well worth it. If you are traveling through Montana, Butte is a historical must-see. |
